A correctly measured walking stick enables the user to maintain an upright posture with the elbow slightly bent. The body's weight is taken through the stick as the user pushes down on it when walking. Using a walking stick of the correct height is important to ensure the correct upright posture is maintained.

When measuring for a walking stick, the handle should rest on the floor against a flexed wrist. The stick should then be adjusted or trimmed to the crease of the wrist.

Where two walking sticks are required, the length should be slightly longer as they will be used ahead of the body when walking. For further details on how to measure for a walking stick.

Quadruped tripod canes

We are often asked what is the correct height for a walking stick to be. SoLutions medical put together this useful guide below which explains how to measure for a walking stick.

To measure for a walking stick correctly it's best to ask someone to help you.  We've detailed the method used by many physiotherapists below.  If you are unsure then please do consult medical advice from your doctor or occupational therapist.

The walking stick user needs to stand upright, in the type of shoes they usually wear, with their arms hanging naturally by their sides.   Another person should turn the walking stick upside down, so that the handle of the stick rests on the floor.

Then position the stick next to the user, making a small mark on the shaft of the stick level with the bump at the bottom of the wrist bone. This will ensure that the user's arm will be slightly bent when they hold the stick.

For wooden sticks you can then use a small hacksaw to cut the stick at this point.  Remove the rubber ferrule from the discarded section of the stick and fit it to the stick. For height adjustable sticks, simply adjust the height accordingly by pushing the small button on the length of the stick and slide the inner shaft up or down to the right length, letting the button release into the correct whole.

This will mean that the user's arm will be slightly bent at the elbow when they hold the stick, and their shoulder will be level. A stick that is too long will force the shoulder unnaturally high. A stick that is too short will force the user to stoop.

If you want to purchase a stick online and therefore can't use the actual walking stick to measure simply measure the distance from the wrist bone to the floor. The walking stick user should ensure they are standing correctly ie. standing upright, in the type of shoes they usually wear, with their arms hanging naturally by their sides.
